Fishers illegally taking cuttlefish

A tip-off from a member of the public to the Fishwatch hotline has resulted in two people being caught over the long weekend illegally taking cuttlefish inside a prohibited area near Whyalla.

The General Manager of PIRSA Fisheries Services, Mark Lewis said that on 10 June, in response to a call made to the Fishwatch 1800 065 522 hotline number, SA police on behalf of PIRSA Fisheries attended an area of coastline between the Port Bonython Jetty and Black Point.

A male and a female were allegedly found to be fishing for cuttlefish inside the area where it is prohibited to take cuttlefish. They were also found allegedly to have in their possession 442 cuttlefish equalling 235 kilograms, and also three squid and four snapper. The four snapper were found to be undersize.

A prosecution brief is being prepared.

"The cuttlefish, squid and snapper have been seized and are in the possession of PIRSA Fisheries. All of the fishing equipment was also seized," Mr Lewis said.

PIRSA Fisheries would like to thank the member of the public who made the call to Fishwatch.

This shows that such community spirited action can get quick results and help stop illegal fishing activity. Cuttlefish are an important resource in the area and also attract interest from a tourism perspective.

Fishing in a protected area will not be tolerated.
