Southeast man fined for undersize mulloway
Tuesday 23 August, 2005
A 36 year old South Australian man was found guilty in the Naracoorte Magistrates Court recently as a result of two related fisheries offences.
Darren O’Brien from Naracoorte was detected with eight undersized mulloway near Nora Creina (20km south of Robe) in December 2004.
Fisheries Officers conducting a routine patrol of the area came across Mr O’Brien and a number of others fishing from the beach. A check of their catch revealed the undersized fish.
The Magistrate recorded convictions on two counts. The first for possessing undersized mulloway and the second for having over the daily bag limit. The man was fined a total of $1084.50 ($300 for undersize, $250 for over the bag limit and an additional penalty of $534.50).
Manager Compliance Operations, Paul Tatarelli said fisheries officers maintain regular patrols through out the year and conduct checks of commercial and recreational fishers to ensure they comply with the rules that apply.
"By complying with the rules, fishers can ensure they are playing their part in ensuring the sustainable use of the State’s fisheries resource," Mr Tatarelli said.
