Rock lobster fisher to face quota evasion charges
Thursday 27th January, 2005
A commercial rock lobster fisher from the State’s South-East has been reported by Fisheries Officers for quota evasion offences.
It will be alleged that the man failed to declare more than 51 kilograms of rock lobster, being part of his annual catch quota.
Manager Compliance Operations, Paul Tatarelli reminded commercial fishers that strict adherence to the catch quota reporting process by all commercial fishers is an integral part of the on-going sustainable management of the rock lobster fishery.
This follows two other cases of alleged quota evasion earlier this month.
"There are a few commercial fishers who are exploiting the fishery, thinking they are above the law," Mr Tararelli said.
"The southern zone commercial rock lobster fishery is managed under a total allowable catch quota system and all commercial catch must be reported.
"Fisheries Officers can check a commercial fishers catch at any time commencing from when the lobsters are caught until they are consigned to a fish processor.
"Any attempt to circumvent the quota system is considered a serious offence under the Fisheries Act."
