Fine for illegal use of fishing net
Friday 18 October, 2002
A Port Lincoln man has been found guilty in the Port Lincoln Magistrates Court of illegal use of a fishing net.
Fisheries Officers from Primary Industries and Resources SA alleged that Peter Francis Gerloff (34) of Port Lincoln used the fishing net at Sleaford Bay near Port Lincoln. The net and more than 350 fish were seized.
Mr Gerloff was fined $1,000 and the Court confirmed forfeiture of the fish and the net.
Regional Manager West, Kym Wakefield said the illegal use of nets puts additional pressure on our limited fish stocks and the community must remain vigilant.
“I would encourage anyone who suspects any illegal net fishing to report it to the Fishwatch telephone line,” Mr Wakefield said.
Fishwatch is a 24 hour 7 day per week telephone service for the reporting of illegal fishing activity. The number is 1800 065 522.
