Outer Harbour Snapper Run

Outer Harbor Snapper Run

This particular spot MUST be fished at night, using running sinker rigs and squid heads or fish fillets as bait. Tommy Ruff cutlets are ideal for fillets, as they are oily, and the scent will attract the snapper. The best type of nights are those on a new moon, or moonless nights, especially when the high tide is around 8.00pm. This would equate to a night during the winter, as it is still light at 8.00pm during the summer (daylight saving). You would need to be out at the spot marked "X" just before sunset, as you would be unable to visually distinguish landmarks as points of reference.

Salmon trout are also found in this area and can be caught at dusk. These would also make ideal bait for snapper.

One problem has been reported in this area, and that is the occurance of sea lice. Sometimes, you cannot keep a bait intact for longer than 15 minutes. Should this occur, then the long road home is usually the available option.

During mid summer, in February, large blue crabs can also be caught using drop nets of the side of the boat. Using some thin wire, simply tie a squid, fish or some leftover bones from the butcher onto the netting and throw it over the side. The crabs migrate thru this ground on their way to St. Kilda shallows to breed.
