Artificial Reef Locations

Courtesy of Ports Corp, South Australia

PIRSA Fisheries & Acquaculture has installed several artificial reefs to provide new fish habitats. These reefs increase the number of fish available to fishers and provide a focus for recreational divers.

Two types of reefs have been installed. One is a tyre module reef of unique design. These modules were designed by the South Australian Research and Development Institute, each of which consists of 28 used car tyres strapped together into a tetrahedron and ballasted with concrete. The other type of artificial reef consists of redundant barges or dredges. These were towed to selected sites and scuttled.

Notes:

  • Artificial Reefs may be marked with a yellow buoy or a radar reflector.
  • WGS 84 satellite navigational systems (GPS) require an adjustment in position of 0.08 minutes SOUTHWARD and 0.08 minutes WESTWARD to agree with the AGD 66 coordinates listed below.
  • The barge at Ardrossan has been provided as an alternative fishing spot to the Zanoni historic wreck site (where entry is banned within 550 metres of the buoy marking the wreck). The artificial reef is located one nautical mile south of the Zanoni.
  • The use of nets or setlines is PROHIBITED within 500 metres of all artificial reefs.
