South Australia has always had a keen interest in generating artificial reefs around its metropolitan waters. Glenelg Tyre Reef was constructed initially of 25,000 surplus secondhand tyres, which were slashed and tied together. It's located approximately 5 kms from Glenelg in about 18 metres of water, making it ideal for medium boats to venture out to.
The reef over the years has been extended, primarily to cover the barren sea bed, giving haven to a variety of species of fish, while at the same time resolving the excess tyre problem. Reports from divers inspecting the reef reveals that healthy, thick weed is growing on the reef, encouraging fish to colonise.
Whiting and Red Mullet can be caught here, while rugger Snapper makes itself known around dusk, and Flathead are to know to swim this area. |
