Tautline Hitch

The Tautline Hitch is a favorite among campers. This knot is useful for adjusting the tension of tent guy lines and laundry lines, among other things. The knot can be slipped to tighten or loosen a line, then holds fast under load.

• Secure one end of the rope.
• Pass other end around stake and run parallel to standing line.
• Make two turns around standiing line, turning towards stake.
• finish with a half hitch tied on the far side of the previous two turns.
• Tighten knot and slide on standing part to tighten or loosen line.
