Anchoring - Anchor Rode Straight Splice
Anchor Rode Straight Splice
A straight splice is a neat, nice handling way of joining two ropes.
 | |
Step 1 Unravel the three strands of rope for a length of 100 mm, and wrap a temporary binding of masking tape around each of the ends. The masking tape secures the yarn within each strand, and does help in the manipulation of the ends through the rope strands. Also, some ten or twenty turns of black thread have been made on the rope so as to restrict the rope unraveling. References will be made to 'rope strands' and 'unraveled strands'. Rope strands will refer to strands still twisted and unified into rope. Unraveled strands will refer to the three 100 mm separated strands. | Step 2 Join together the two pieces of rope and their unraveled strands, and 'what we have here joined together, let no man tear asunder'. |
 | |
Step 3 Grab one of the unraveled strands of the right rope and pass it under it's nearest adjacent unraveled strand on the left rope. The repeat this for the other two right rope strands, so that all 3 right rope strands are safely tucked in. | Step 4 Turn the rope around and repeat step 3 with the 3 unraveled, untucked stands. They will be safely tucked in now, and your splice should resemble the picture above. |
 | |
Step 5 Continue to weave the unraveled strands on both sides under the adjacent and appropriate unraveled rope, in the pattern which, now, should become increasingly obvious. Stop when the unraveled strands are too short to weave.Remove the masking tape, trim the ends to an even length, fray the ends to aid melting, and ignite them with a cigarette lighter. | Step 6 While the nylon ends are still molten, place the splice on the pavement, and roll it under your shoe, fusing the cut ends with the rope strands adjacent to them. |
