Talkback Caller encourages people to sign petitions displayed at fishing & tackle shops to stop the issue of fishing licences.
PETER NICHOLLS - PRESENTER:
Joe, you’re on the line right now, and you’re talking fishing licences I believe.
JOE - MALE TALKBACK CALLER:
Thank you. Hello?
NICHOLLS:
Yes, you’re on air.
JOE:
Good evening fellas, how are you going?
NICHOLLS:
Yeah, good.
KEVIN SWEENY - PRESENTER:
Joe, I assume that’s Joe Ienco (ph. sp.), is that right?
JOE:
That’s the one.
SWEENEY:
Okay, go for it mate, what do you want to say?
JOE:
Oh look, I just wanted to let know … let people know that there is a petition against fishing licences out there, being circulated throughout the fish and tackle shops. And I’d like people to actually sign that petition saying they don’t want any fishing licences.
I’m … personally, I’m representing basically the South Australian recreational fishing foundation which has been set up to … basically in opposition to SARFAC. SARFAC seems to actually represent the … it doesn’t really represent the public properly in the sense of they want fishing licences but yet the public doesn’t.
SWEENEY:
Joe, hasn’t … the Premier came out at the start of Labor Party’s term in this state and said categorically during this term there was no intention to bring in recreational fishing licences.
JOE:
No.
SWEENEY:
Doesn’t that satisfy you?
JOE:
Not really, because SARFAC, the body that’s actually represent… supposedly representing the recreational fishers, goes onto … even though the people don’t want it, eighty to ninety per cent of the people don’t want it, they’re going to recommend that they want it. So, I’m just wondering where they actually get their facts from.
SWEENEY:
Joe, just quickly, what’s your committee actually made up? I mean, have you got some guys there with experience, have you?
JOE:
Oh, huge amounts of experience. They’re the … the guys themselves, you’ve got people like Bruce Harris who’s been fishing for sixty-five years, radio announcer as well and he knows anything about fishing, and I suppose would be as good as you’ll get. Les Brown (ph.sp.), he’s been fishing for seventy years; other people that advise us, which were advisers to the former premier. So really, the body itself is quite well represented.
NICHOLLS:
All right, appreciate your call Joe, that’s good stuff.
So if you’re interested in signing that petition we’d …
SWEENEY:
It’s actually available at all fishing tackle stores. So most of the decent stores have actually got this petition going, Pete. And all I can say, just quickly, it has been very popular, particularly with customers through the door, particularly just the average Joe Blow fisherman. So… but you are starting to get all the strength of South Australia.
NICHOLLS:
All right. All I can repeat is the Premier’s put on a spot; he did say that.
